What is bulk disbursement?

Bulk disbursement is sending many payments at once in a single approved batch, instead of paying each recipient individually. Businesses use it for salaries, supplier payments, agent and rider commissions, loan disbursements, dividends and refunds, typically by uploading a file or calling an API, with each payment tracked separately.

How a bulk payment run works

The pattern is the same whether you are paying 20 people or 20,000:

  • Prepare the list of recipients and amounts, by CSV upload or through the API
  • Review and approve the batch once, rather than payment by payment
  • Send to mobile money and bank accounts in the same run
  • Track each payment separately, with automatic retries on failures
  • Reconcile the batch against your records with its transaction references

What to look for

The things that matter at scale are per-recipient status, automatic retries, alerts for failures and low balances, and a clean reconciliation trail. Without those, a failed payment in a batch of thousands only surfaces when the recipient complains.

Related questions

What is the difference between bulk disbursement and bulk payment?
They describe the same thing. "Disbursement" is more common in lending and grants, where money is paid out to many beneficiaries; "bulk payment" is the more general business term.
Can bulk disbursements be automated?
Yes. Kiotapay offers an API and webhooks so payouts can be triggered from your own system, such as a loan management or payroll platform, instead of uploading files by hand.
